Limitanei

The various fortified regions along the empire's frontiers were called limes (q.v.), which is Latin for "border." This explains the term limitanei for the garrison troops who defended the limes from the fourth century to the late sixth century. Limitanei included both cavalry and infantry units, also auxiliary troops, commanded by a doux (q.v.). As garrison troops (as distinct from the comitatenses [q.v.], the mobile forces) they became, in effect, farmer-soldiers whose military obligations were passed down from father to son.
